Malaysia–China Bilateral Meeting At AFMGM+3

YB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Minister of Finance II held a constructive bilateral meeting with H.E. Minister Lan Fo’an of China’s Ministry of Finance on the sidelines of the ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers’ and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting (AFMGM+3) on 4 May 2025.

The discussion reaffirmed the deep and enduring Malaysia–China relationship, recently elevated to a high-level strategic partnership following President Xi Jinping’s historic visit to Malaysia.

 

Key highlights:

  1. Strengthened collaboration under the ASEAN+3 financial cooperation track
  2. Commitment to open, rules-based trade and multilateralism
  3. Shared interest in a joint ASEAN+3 Finance Statement to be presented to ASEAN+3 Leaders Summit later this year
  4. Expanding trade opportunities, especially as China pivots to a domestic-driven growth model

 

Minister Lan highlighted China’s shift toward a domestic-driven growth model, which presents new export opportunities for Malaysia. Minister Lan also expressed joint interest in issuing key deliverables of ASEAN+3 Joint Statement for the Leaders’ Summit in 2025.

YB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah shared Malaysia’s commitment to inclusive growth, regional resilience and deepening economic ties with China. With Malaysia co-chairing ASEAN+3 in 2025, both sides expressed optimism in driving forward meaningful cooperation for the region. He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to open, rules-based trade and regional financial cooperation and expressed appreciation for China’s continued support in advancing ASEAN+3 initiatives under Malaysia’s 2025 Chairmanship and ASEAN+3 Co-Chairmanship.
